Victorian COVID-19 cases see Coles and Aldi supermarkets listed as exhibition sites as town wakes up to tighter lockdown

The number of COVID-19 exposure sites in Victoria is approaching 550 after four supermarkets, several public toilets and a 7-Eleven were added overnight.
Notably, buyers from a Coles supermarket in south Melbourne and an Aldi in the north of the city have been identified as close contacts of a confirmed case and are to be tested and isolated for 14 days, regardless the result.
Meanwhile, Melburnians will wake up on Tuesday with stricter lockdown measures, including a reimposed curfew and the closure of playgrounds, as health officials fight to control the worsening coronavirus outbreak in the city.
People living in Melbourne are required to stay in their homes between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. after Prime Minister Daniel Andrews announced a nighttime curfew that went into effect at 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
The city’s lockdown was extended for another two weeks until September 2, with playgrounds and skate parks closed, exercises limited to two people and authorized workers required to hold permits.
Andrews said there was “no choice” but to tighten restrictions given the rise in mysterious infections, the number of infected children and several illegal gatherings on weekends.
Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said ‘we are on the edge of the cliff here’ as he warned that a ‘grumbling’ number of daily cases could end up being 100 in a fortnight, or thousands in a month.
Of Monday’s 22 new cases, 19 were linked to known outbreaks and 14 were in quarantine while infectious.
There are currently over 14,200 close contacts across Victoria and over 541 exhibition sites.
