Grand chef Luke Mangan commits to Australia’s first Kimpton hotel

Sydneyis the most awaited Hotel the opening for 2022 just got even more exciting, with the news that Luke Mangan will bring a “revitalized” version of his iconic neighborhood restaurant to the boutique luxury stay.

The chef will direct the culinary offerings of Australia’s first Kimpton, ready to take over the enviable art deco Primus Hotel to place.

The Big Chef has been teasing a new Luke’s Kitchen location for some time now, and it looks like the new iteration may have some surprises in store for fans.

“It seemed like a perfect opportunity to not only reinvigorate Luke’s Kitchen, but also to create a range of innovative dining experiences based on Kimpton’s heritage of locally loved dining,” said Mangan.

While Luke’s Kitchen takes center stage on this stylish stay, the chef will oversee a number of food and drink at the hotel.

In addition to the main restaurant, which takes pride of place in the site’s historic art deco lobby, guests can expect an elegant 1930s-style cocktail bar, a poolside rooftop bar, a wine cellar offering intimate tasting experiences and a cafe that makes use of artisanal coffee and fresh pastries.

The San Franciscan-based hotel brand is renowned for its ultra-cool design and guest benefits, with Kimptons regularly appearing in the “best” lists of major publications.

In fact, the brand’s tailored approach and “genuine service” were just some of the reasons the Grand Chef was drawn to the hotel.

“Kimpton Sydney’s location is superb with its blend of nightlife from neighboring Chinatown and Darlinghurst and the independent spirit of neighboring Surry Hills, all bustling in this incredible Sydney heritage building,” said Mangan.

How the chef will complement Kimpton’s offerings with neighboring locations remains to be seen.

Jan Smits, co-CEO and vice-president of Pro-invest Group, the company that acquired the Primus site, said the group was delighted to welcome “Luke’s vision, expertise and experience to help bring Kimpton Sydney to life “.

“Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants is loved around the world for its award-winning and locally inspired culinary creativity.”

The old Primus is now closed as it undergoes a full refresh ahead of its Kimpton Sydney debut.

The famous chef is no stranger to the hospitality industry; Mangan’s fine-dining Glass Brasserie resides in the newly refurbished Hilton Sydney, and it has a restaurant chain spanning the sprawling fleet of cruise line P&O ships.
